Portrait of Kay Sage

This painting features a portrait of the American surrealist artist Kay Sage. It is 18”x24” and is painted with oil paint on stretched canvas. Framed with reclaimed wood.

A desire to understand the barren, surreal, inner world she painted pulled me into enjoying art history during college ~ & her work, Le Passage inspired me to try painting portraits in oils.

While her style is quite different from mine, my connection to Sage’s art grew deeper with the isolation, stillness, and inward retreating much of the world experienced during Covid around the time I painted this portrait. Many of my daughter’s and my days during Covid lockdown and pandemic were spent by our bedroom window facing the Olympic Mountains which felt like being in a colorful, but still lonely version of her mid century painting Le Passage.
